细菌的一科 。革兰氏染色阴性厌氧球菌 。细胞直径为0.3～2.6微米，细菌基本排列成对，相邻的一侧可呈扁平状，无芽孢，不运动，无鞭毛，寄生于温血动物（如人、反刍动物、啮齿动物和猪）的肠道中。包括韦荣氏球菌属、氨基酸球菌属和巨球菌属。
症状
过高的韦荣氏球菌水平导致过多的体液涌入肺组织，导致肺水肿。同时，也危害肝脏组织，导致黄疸及其他组织出现黄色病变，死后尸检尤为明显。分析韦荣氏球菌是否存在可简单地通过检测肝脏、胰腺和肾上腺中二氢神经鞘氨醇（sphinganine）与神经鞘氨醇（sphingosine）的比值来判断。该比值可作为判断韦荣氏球菌中毒的一个生物学指标，也可作为判断其他霉毒素是否存在的一个生物学指标。
