脆弱拟杆菌能分解糖，对胆汁耐受。为类杆菌属的代表株。革兰氏阴性杆菌，两端钝圆而浓染，中间有不着色部份。在正常情况下,它能维持消化系统平衡和机体抵抗力，是免疫系统的驱动力，已被应用于健康领域。脆弱类杆菌专性厌氧、无芽胞、无动力、直径为0.5×1.3～1.6μm 。专性厌氧菌，氯化血红素和20%胆汁可促进其生长。牛心、牛脑液血平皿培养48小时，菌落1～3mm ，圆，微凸，灰白，表面光滑，边缘整齐，大多不溶血。生化反应弱，解糖。解酶反应阳性，葡萄糖的终末代谢产物有乙酸和琥珀酸；吲哚不定，耐胆盐，水解七叶灵。不还原硝酸盐。产生苹果酸盐脱氢酶、谷氨酸脱氢酶、葡萄糖6磷酸脱氢酶（g6pdh）、6磷酸葡萄糖脱氢酶（6pgdh）、细胞壁粘肽层含有二氨基庚二酸。依据对鼠李糖、海藻糖，甘露醇发酵及吲哚试验可区别本组菌落。DNA的G C含量为39～48%。本菌主要分布于结肠和口腔中。
